Melba Strickland Sikes

Melba Strickland Sikes, 85, died peacefully on February 24, 2011 following a brief illness.
She was born on March 7, 1925 in Ellabell, GA to William and Ethel Strickland. A longtime resident of Savannah, Melba worked for the Citizens and Southern National Bank for over 30 years before retiring in 1981. A member of The Crossroads Baptist Church, Melba enjoyed participating in many church activities. She especially enjoyed participating in the Hand Bell Choir, and travelling with her friends.
Melba was preceded in death by her husband, Fred, her daughter, Peggy Sikes Pope, and her sister, Nedra Dixon.
Surviving are her loving son, Michael Mary Gene and her precious grandchildren, Kenney and Maggie Sikes. She is also survived by her brother, James O. Strickland Hilda of Houston, TX and several nieces and nephews.
Melba will be remembered as a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and sister who will be greatly missed.
The family will receive friends on Sunday from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
The funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, February 28, 2011, at The Crossroads Baptist Church.
Mrs. Sikes will lie in state from 1:30 pm until 2:00 pm at Connors Baptist Church in Cobbtown, GA followed by a graveside service in the church cemetery.
